Due to the extremely low levels of carbon and silica, Alloy 59 does not tend to dissolve grain boundaries when thermoformed or welded. Therefore the alloy can be used in many chemical processes with oxidizing and reducing media. In addition, Alloy 59 is more resistant to chloride ions due to the high concentrations of nickel, chromium and molybdenum.
The corrosion tests described in the relevant standards generally refer to oxidizing conditions in which Alloy 59 has been shown to outperform all other Ni-Cr-Mo alloys. But Alloy 59 is also very resistant to reducing conditions. Accordingly, its boiling corrosion rate from 10% sulfuric acid is less than a third of the attack measured on other introduced Ni-Cr-Mo alloys. Due to this excellent behavior, the alloy has also proven itself in the chemical industry for reducing material applications.
Alloy 59 can be welded with the same types of metal as many other metals using conventional methods.
