    This Ni-Co alloy, called W. No. 1.3981 / Kovar / Alloy K, has two typical applications. 1.3981 / Kovar / Alloy K has the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion of all alloys and metals between 20-500 °C. However, the coefficient of thermal expansion is also on a par with glass and ceramics. It is an ideal material for glass-to-metal or ceramic-to-metal sealing. Many glass sealing systems are made with 1.3981 / Kovar / Alloy K. When heated, the material does not expand, but shrinks, acquiring a denser structure. This shrinkage continues until it reaches the tipping point. Therefore the 1.3981 / Kovar / Alloy K material can withstand thermal shock and should be preferred where thermal shock resistance is required.

    It is melted under vacuum. Applicable standard is ASTM F15. From normal to larger sizes, 1.3981 has no phase transformation at -196 °C.

    The material 1.3981 consists of 30 percent nickel and 18 percent cobalt. Heat treatment makes 1.3981/Kovar/Alloy K material more durable structure with different hardness, suitable for different environment. Powerful transfer valves, camera flashes, transistors, a variety of electronic circuit boards are some of the areas of application to be mentioned.
