Ti Grade 2 is a commercially pure titanium with excellent biocompatibility and good mechanical properties. The achievable yield strength is comparable to austenitic stainless steels. Small amounts of interstitially dissolved elements increase the corrosion resistance. Ti Grade 2 is used in a variety of applications where strength, ductility and low density are required and which may be surrounded by corrosive media. Ti Grade 2 can be used in continuous operation at temperatures up to 425 °C; short-term operation up to 540 °C is possible. Typical applications for Ti grade 2 are orthopaedic implants in medical technology or heat exchangers in energy technology. Other applications can be found in aviation and electrochemistry.
The corrosion resistance of titanium grade 2 is based on a strongly adherent, stable and protective oxide layer that forms in the presence of oxygen. Grade 2 offers excellent corrosion resistance to seawater and atmospheric sea air. Titanium Grade 2 is resistant to attack by wet chlorides and metal chlorides, chlorite and hypochlorite solutions, nitric and chromic acids, organic acids and many gaseous industrial applications.
