The material 1.3912 is a binary nickel-iron alloy with 36 % nickel. The very low coefficient of thermal expansion at room temperature is useful for aerospace composites, precision components and tools for pendulum and thermostat rods. The alloy is also used as a low expansion component in bimetallic strips, cryogenics and laser components.
Fully annealed material is recommended for most applications where alloy 1.3912 / Alloy 36 is exposed to a wide temperature range. The suitable annealing temperature is 850-900 °C and depends on time, shape and dimensions. Slow cooling is preferred.
When maximum dimensional stability with minimum expansion is required for materials used in the normal ambient temperature range.
After this treatment, the alloy must be fully stable at temperatures up to 100 °C. Protective media should be used during preheating or annealing.
