Magnesium alloys are lightweight and easy to machine. They are often anodized to improve corrosion resistance. The magnesium alloy AZ31B is available in various forms such as plates, sheets, and rods. It is an alternative to aluminum alloys due to its good strength-to-weight ratio. Compared to other magnesium alloys, it is widely used.
The density of magnesium is one third lower than that of aluminum. As an alloying additive, it improves the mechanical machining and welding properties of aluminum. These alloys are used in aircraft and automotive construction.
The magnesium alloy AZ31B is mainly used in aerospace and general commercial applications. Magnesium is used in products that benefit from its low weight, such as car seats, luggage, laptops, cameras, and power tools. It is also added to molten iron and steel to remove sulfur.
Magnesium sulfate is sometimes used as a mordant for dyes. Magnesium hydroxide is added to plastics to make them fire-resistant. Heat-resistant bricks for fireplaces and stoves are made from magnesium oxide.
