Indium is a rare, lustrous silver-white metal. It has an atomic number 49 and an element symbol In. It is widespread in minute quantities in the earth's crust and is also found in the hydrosphere. In our online shop Auremo there are various rare earth metals at reasonable prices.

Indium resembles tin in its physical and chemical properties and partly in its toxicological properties. It is extremely soft and malleable. Indium is stable in air, but when heated it burns with a non-luminous, blue-red flame, yielding indium oxide. The surface of indium remains shiny up to the melting point of 156 °C; over it it forms an oxide film. Indium reacts explosively with nitrous oxide plus acetonitrile. Indium is resistant to water, it is attacked by mineral acids and is very resistant to alkalis.

Indium can be polished and retains its luster better than silver. Its melting point is 156.60 °C, its boiling point is 2,072 °C and its density is 7.31 g/cm3. Indium's low melting point is the main factor in its commercial importance. This factor makes it ideal for soldering the lead wires to semiconductors and transistors in the electronics industry. Another major use is alloying with other metals. Alloys of indium and silver and indium and lead have the ability to carry electricity better than pure silver and lead. Indium is used as a coating for bearings to increase wear resistance.

      Properties of Indium:

      • low melting
      • low boiling point
      • corrosion resistance

      Main uses of indium:

      • as an alloy component
      • mechanical engineering
      • aviation industry
