Niobium belongs to the group of refractory metals and has a melting point of approx. 2477 °C. Niobium is characterised by its good strength and relatively low weight. Like all refractory metals, niobium has a high melting point and a relatively high density of approx. 8.57 g/cm3. The thermal conductivity of niobium is comparable to that of tantalum, but lower than that of tungsten. The coefficient of thermal expansion of niobium is higher than that of tungsten, but still significantly lower than that of iron or aluminium. Due to its high ductility, niobium is ideal for forming processes such as bending, punching, pressing or deep drawing. Niobium is naturally coated with a dense oxide layer. The oxide layer protects the material and ensures high corrosion resistance.
High strength and good corrosion resistance, even at high temperatures, make it possible to use niobium as a construction material.
Properties of niobium wire:
- good chemical resistance
- Very high melting temperature
- Resistant to air
- good forging and rolling properties
- superconductivity
- good biocompatibility
Main application for niobium wire:
- Alloy metal for steels
- Aircraft and rocket engines
- electrical engineering
- Metallurgy
- Chemical industry
