Molybdenum is a silver-white, high-melting, brittle heavy metal with excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.
Due to its melting point of 2623 °C, the heavy metal molybdenum is a refractory metal. It has high hardness and ductility. Molybdenum is very valuable as an alloying element, as it can increase the high-temperature strength, tensile strength or hardness in alloys.
It also increases fatigue strength, edge retention and through-hardening. At the same time, it reduces temper brittleness, ductility and forgeability.
Pure molybdenum is very similar to tungsten and is easier to machine due to its low hardness and density.
The industrial sectors in which molybdenum is frequently used are diverse. It is used as an alloy metal for electrodes, steel, X-ray and transmitter tubes or wear layers. It is characterised by excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and a high melting point. Molybdenum cannot be used in aerospace technology.
