Brass is a copper-zinc alloy which is slightly harder than pure copper, but not as hard as bronze. The material CW614N has good strength values and good corrosion resistance and is known colloquially as MS58. This material is a main alloy for machining and is mainly used where machining shaping is required. The corrosion resistance of brass flat bars is not the same as that of a pure copper-zinc alloy, as it is primarily the zinc-rich β-phase that is attacked. In addition, corrosion in the form of dezincification can occur under certain conditions. Under certain circumstances, the material tends to stress corrosion cracking. Welding is not recommended with this material. The material is used, for example, for fittings, moulded turned parts of all kinds, screws, nuts and lock cylinders.
Brass is used for ornamental objects and fittings because of its gold-like colour. But brass is also of great technical importance because of its good electrical conductivity and mechanical strength. It is also frequently used for fittings and fixtures in the sanitary sector because of its good corrosion-chemical properties.
