Material 12hn3a is an alloyed chromium-nickel steel intended for the production of components that require good strength, ductility and toughness of the core as well as good surface hardness and are used under impact stress or at sub-zero temperatures.
The material 12hn3a combines excellent strength with good ductility and very good notched impact strength at low temperatures.
Steels of this grade are among the best structural steels. The combination of nickel and chromium gives this steel the properties required for the manufacture of critical parts.
As nickel is completely dissolved in solid solution, it increases the hardness and strength of the ferrite much more than chromium. The simultaneous presence of nickel and chromium in the steel results in a good combination of mechanical properties and high hardenability.
Nickel has a favourable effect on hardenability and gives the core good toughness with a slight increase in strength. It lowers the temperatures required to heat the surface layer and core during quenching and helps to ensure that the steel remains fine-grained during normal hardening. Nickel contributes to the good toughness of hardened case-hardening steels used at low temperatures.
