Description:
Stainless steel 1.4301 is the standard austenitic chromium-nickel steel. Among the steel grades, austenitic stainless steels are the best known and most widely used. In addition to a chromium content of approx. 17 %, they contain nickel. It is the nickel content that makes the austenitic structure possible, which favours corrosion resistance. In fact, the lack of a second phase - such as martensite or ferrite caused by deformation - favours corrosion resistance.
The material 1.4301 is widely used thanks to its excellent intercrystalline corrosion resistance, good cold formability and deep-drawing properties and its good weldability. Alloy 1.4301, X5CrNi18-10 is corrosion-resistant at high temperatures of up to 300°C, but can also be used at very low temperatures, such as for cryogenic applications. In its soft state, 1.4301 is practically non-magnetic. Work hardening by rolling or drawing is relatively low, so that the spring properties, such as those of 1.4310, X10CrNi18-8, cannot be achieved.
