Description:
The element cadmium is a soft, tough, bendable, divalent metal. Cadmium anodes are easy to cut. Cadmium is similar to zinc in its chemical properties. However, cadmium is not as active as zinc. At normal air temperatures, the surface of cadmium is coated with an oxide layer, which makes reactions more difficult. Most reactions take place when heated.
Cadmium is used to produce hot-rolled and cold-rolled cadmium anodes for electroplating steel, copper and aluminium products. The products manufactured in this way retain their technical properties in rooms with high humidity, in seawater and in contact with electric current.
Cadmium anodes are a multi-component material that contains predominantly cadmium in its structure and is doped in small proportions with lead, copper and other elements that influence the technical properties of the anodes.
This element and its compounds are highly toxic even in low concentrations.
Properties of cadmium anodes:
- good strength
- plasticity
- current conductivity
- High corrosion resistance
- heat resistance
- easy processing
Main application of cadmium anodes:
- Automotive industry
- Electrode material
- as an alloying metal in low-melting alloys
- as rust protection for ferrous materials
