Description:
Tin is a silver-white metal. It has a relatively low melting point for metals (232 °C). One of the most important applications is soldering. Due to the formation of a thin oxide layer on the surface, tin is chemically relatively inert and is therefore also used for tinning food-safe tins (tinplate) and in medicine. It is also used to produce alloys, e.g. for bronzes and bearing metals. Tin is increasingly being used in the manufacture of chemicals and in electronics. Tin is very resistant to air and water at room temperature.
Tin can be easily alloyed with most other ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Tin alloys have excellent sliding properties in the presence of lubricants and are therefore often used as bearings.
A layer of tin applied to a part or product by electroplating protects the surface from corrosion. The treated part becomes more resistant to temperature influences and aggressive media. The appearance of the product is also improved. These tin products are also used in electrolysis processes.
Properties of tin:
- High corrosion resistance
- non-toxicity
- malleability
- Durability
Main application of tin:
- Tinplate
- Sanitary installations
- Machine parts in the food industry
- Tin pipes for mineral water or beer pipes
- as an alloying metal for tin bronze
