Hafnium wire is relatively soft, making it easy to roll and forge. Hafnium can also be machined. Caution is required when processing, as hafnium can easily ignite to chips when finely crushed into powder. In compact form, hafnium does not burn.
Hafnium's chemical properties are comparable to titanium and zirconium. In chip form and especially in powder form, hafnium is very reactive, meaning it is highly flammable and explosive. In closed form, it is rather inert, although this changes at higher temperatures. At a temperature of 700 °C and above, hydrogen is absorbed very quickly, and hafnium wire also reacts with water, oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen.
Hafnium wire is resistant to acids except for hydrofluoric acid. For water and steam, resistance is up to 400 °C, and for acids and alkalis, good corrosion resistance is up to 100 °C.
Hafnium is not attacked by alkalis, even boiling caustic soda mixed with sodium peroxide.
Properties of hafnium wire:
- good machinability
- good heat resistance
- excellent corrosion resistance
- good resistance to alkalis
Main application of hafnium wire:
- gas industry
- automobile industry
- shipbuilding
- chemical and food industry
- construction industry
