Ferrotitanium is a ferroalloy, an alloy of iron and titanium, consisting of 20% iron and 70% titanium. It is used in steel production as a cleaning agent for iron and steel; titanium reacts strongly with sulphur, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen, forms insoluble compounds and binds these in the slag. It is therefore used for deoxidation and sometimes also for desulphurisation and denitrification. In steel production, the addition of titanium results in a metal with a finer grain structure. Ferrotitanium is produced by mixing titanium sponge and scrap with iron and melting it in an induction furnace.
