Yttrium oxide is an extremely heat-resistant refractory material that solidifies with increasing temperature (maximum approx. 1000 °C) and is suitable for melting a range of highly radioactive metals (including yttrium itself). Yttrium oxide plays a special role in the casting of uranium. One of the most important applications of yttria as a heat-resistant refractory is in the manufacture of the most durable and highest quality steel casting nozzles (a device for dispensing molten steel); yttria is the least likely to erode when it comes into contact with a moving jet of molten steel.

By spraying yttrium onto parts of combustion engines, the wear resistance of the parts can be increased 400 to 500 times compared to chromium plating.

In addition to the aforementioned properties of yttrium, the high tensile strength of the alloys of this metal with a tensile strength of 300 GPa should be emphasised. Yttrium's ability to form a protective film when heated in air is already being utilised in the nuclear and rocket industries.
