Is the standard of austenitic stainless chromium-nickel steels and first commercial stainless steel (today with a production share of 33%). Steel with medium corrosion resistance and good cold formability. The relatively high carbon tolerance means a certain risk of the formation of chromium carbides in the grain boundaries during thermal treatments, which impairs the resistance to intergranular corrosion. A solution heat treatment is then required to dissolve the carbides, followed by a rapid quench to prevent any new precipitate. For critical applications, 304 L steel with limited carbon content is preferred. A strong deformation can slightly magnetize the steel. This steel is not easy to machine. 1.4301 can be welded with and without filler metal.
