Erbium is a silver-grey, shiny metallic, soft heavy metal. The metal is paramagnetic. Erbium is malleable, but also quite brittle. It has a high melting point of 1500 °C and a boiling point of 2900 °C. Erbium is very reactive. It is a paramagnetic and electropositive metal. Erbium reacts slowly with air and water and dissolves in acids. Nevertheless, it is relatively resistant to corrosion compared to other rare earth metals. An oxide layer forms very quickly in humid air.
Erbium is added to fibre optic cables as a dopant and serves as a signal amplifier. Erbium is also used in nuclear technology. The metal is used as an alloying additive for alloys with titanium in metallurgy. Erbium is used in the nuclear industry and in metallurgy. For example, erbium in combination with vanadium reduces hardness and improves machinability. Erbium oxide produces a pink colour and is used as a colouring agent in glasses and glazes for enamel.
Due to its ability to absorb hydrogen, erbium is actively used as a hydrogen storage medium.
