Vanadium is a grey, hard, brittle metal used to reduce sensitivity to overheating and increase tensile strength in steel. Vanadium is a relatively common element, it does not occur naturally in elemental form.

The very hard, brittle and corrosion-resistant metal is used as an alloying additive in steels to increase tensile strength, wear resistance, heat resistance and hardness. Vanadium suppresses sensitivity to overheating in fast-rotating saw blades and increases cutting durability. When cold, it is easy to forge, roll and draw.

The metal is widely used in small quantities and is found chemically bound in most bauxites, for example. Vanadium is mainly used as an alloy metal for steel and chrome steel. Steel alloys with up to 5 % vanadium are used as tool steel in the field of hot and high-speed steels, e.g. as drills or taps. Vanadium is used in steel alloys because of its tendency to form strong carbides.

Although vanadium is a relatively base metal, it is not attacked by air as it is coated with a thin oxide layer. However, strong oxidation occurs when heated above 300 °C.
