Magnesium AZ31B is a silvery white, light metal. It is relatively soft, malleable and moderately reactive. Its surface is protected by a thin oxide layer that is difficult to remove. This oxide layer means that magnesium does not need to be stored in an oxygen-free environment like the alkali metals, although it does oxidise in air. Magnesium reacts with water at room temperature, forming hydrogen bubbles on the metal surface. Magnesium also reacts with most acids. Magnesium has a reputation for being highly flammable, although this can be true for finely divided magnesium powders and strips.
Magnesium alloy AZ31B is used primarily in aerospace and general commercial applications.
Magnesium oxide is used as an additive in livestock feed, as a filler in plastics, in the manufacture of heat-resistant bricks and in products such as lightweight bicycle frames, car seats and luggage. It can also be alloyed with up to 10% aluminium and traces of zinc to increase strength and used in car bodies and aircraft. Magnesium is increasingly used by car manufacturers because of its environmental benefits, such as lighter vehicles with longer life.
