Indium is very soft with high plasticity, mouldability and ductility. It has good corrosion resistance to water and alkalis. It is generally found in iron, lead, zinc and copper ores. It is stable in air but dissolves in acids. It burns with a violet flame when heated above its melting point.

Its main application is in the manufacture of semiconductors. 99.9% pure indium imparts conductivity to other materials. The metal itself is also a semiconductor in some compounds and is used in the manufacture of devices and thermocouples. Indium is used in the manufacture of electronic devices equipped with liquid crystal displays: TVs, monitors, laptops, tablets, mobile phones. It has no analogues in this sector.
