The martensitic precipitation hardening steel 13-8 PH is characterised by high strength and hardness as well as excellent resistance to general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. In addition, the alloy exhibits good ductility and toughness in large cross-sections in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. These impressive properties of 13-8 PH stainless steel are achieved through precise control of the chemical composition and microstructure, as well as a special melting process that reduces impurities and minimises segregation. Compared to other iron-based materials, this alloy offers excellent mechanical properties under demanding environmental conditions.
The stainless steel 13-8 PH is easy to process and can be hardened at low temperatures in a single operation. Cold working before hardening speeds up the process, especially at low hardening temperatures.
This steel is used for a variety of applications including valve parts, fittings, cold formed and machined fasteners, shafts, chassis parts, pins, lock washers, aircraft parts, nuclear reactor parts and petrochemical equipment where resistance to stress corrosion cracking is required. In general, this alloy is a good choice when a steel with high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance and resistance to stress corrosion cracking with minimal directional dependence of properties is required.
