Stainless steel with the material number 1.4404 is a widely used chromium-nickel steel with added molybdenum and the alloy designation X2CrNiMo17-12-2.
One of the main advantages of AISI 316L stainless steel is its increased corrosion resistance in corrosive environments. The heat resistance can reach almost 600°C while maintaining high formability.
Comparing two similar stainless steel grades, AISI 304 and AISI 316L, it is easy to favour the second. AISI 316L has the best creep strength at high temperatures and mechanical properties that are an order of magnitude better at sub-zero temperatures. The difference between these two stainless steels is therefore obvious.
In cases where there is a risk of corrosion in welded constructions, a low-carbon grade AISI 316L should be used. Despite its great advantages, the price of AISI 316L is an order of magnitude higher than that of AISI 304, so careful consideration should be given to whether a stainless steel with molybdenum is required or whether it can be replaced by a food grade AISI 304.
Properties of the material 1.4404:
- Very high corrosion resistance
- excellent heat resistance
- good creep resistance
- good forgeability
- very good weldability
- polishable
