Zirconium is a non-toxic, soft, shiny silver-white metal that is highly flammable. Online shop Auremo supplies high quality zirconium at favourable prices.
The metal is very quickly passivated by a thin oxide layer and is therefore corrosion-resistant. Zirconium has a high melting point, is highly flammable in powder form and burns with a magnesium-like flame. Zirconium is non-toxic and only occurs in small quantities in the human body.
Pure zirconium is soft and can be easily forged and rolled. It can also be machined, although it should be noted that fine chips and dust are highly flammable.
As zirconium produces a bright light without fogging when it burns, it is used in the manufacture of flashlight powders, fireworks and signalling lights. In nuclear technology, it is used because of its neutron permeability in apparatus in which absorption is to be avoided. Zirconium is often used as an alloying metal to improve thermal and mechanical properties. It is used in chromium steel to prevent brittleness. Zirconium has a deoxidising and denitrating effect in combination with sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen.
Properties of zirconium:
- excellent strength
- corrosion resistance
- good machinability
Main areas of application for zirconium:
- Chemical industry
