Magnesium AZ31B is a silver-white, lightweight metal. It is relatively soft, malleable and moderately reactive. Its surface is protected by a thin oxide layer that is difficult to remove. This oxide layer means that magnesium does not have to be stored in an oxygen-free environment like alkali metals, although it does oxidise in the air. Magnesium reacts with water at room temperature, forming hydrogen bubbles on the surface of the metal. Magnesium also reacts with most acids. Magnesium has a reputation for being highly flammable, although this may be true for finely divided magnesium powders and ribbons.

Magnesium alloy AZ31B is used primarily in aerospace and general commercial applications.

Magnesium oxide is used as an additive in animal feed, as a filler in plastics, in the manufacture of heat-resistant bricks and in products such as lightweight bicycle frames, car seats and luggage. It can also be alloyed with up to 10% aluminium and traces of zinc to increase strength and be used in car bodies and aircraft. Magnesium is increasingly being used by car manufacturers due to its environmental benefits, such as lighter vehicles with a longer lifespan.
