The material 2.4858 is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum, copper and titanium. The chemistry of the alloy is designed to have exceptional resistance to many corrosive environments. The nickel content of Alloy 825 is sufficient to provide good resistance to chloride ion stress corrosion cracking. It offers exceptional resistance to reducing environments such as those containing nickel, sulfuric and phosphoric acids along with molybdenum and copper. Molybdenum in the 2.4858 alloy also offers resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. The chromium content gives high resistance to various oxidizing agents such as nitric acid, nitrates and oxidizing salts. The addition of titanium is achieved by a suitable heat treatment, titanium serves to stabilize the alloy against sensitization by intergranular corrosion.
The material's resistance to general and local corrosion under various conditions gives the alloy a wide utility. Incoloy 825's scope includes chemical processing, environmental protection, oil and natural gas recovery, acid production, nuclear fuel reprocessing and radioactive waste processing.
