This is a high strength, low carbon martensitic stainless steel. In our standard stock condition, the metal matrix consists of 80% martensite, 10% austenite and 10% ferrite. This composition allows for a low-carbon martensitic structure after quenching and tempering.
This alloy was developed for applications in mildly corrosive environments where good fatigue resistance, strength and weldability are required. Specific applications are hydro turbine parts, bolts, shear pins, piston rods and hydroelectric power plant equipment.
The weldability of EN 1.4418 is better than that of common martensitic stainless steels. This is due to the properties of the tempered structure, which contains low-carbon martensite and finely divided austenite. Welding should preferably be done with Avesta Sheffield 248 SV filler metal. Type T316L austenitic material may be used where lower weld tensile strength is acceptable. Except for heavy constructions and in special cases, no preheating is normally required.
Post-weld heat treatment is not normally required. After welding with filler metals similar to the base material, tempering at 580 - 590 °C is recommended.
