Vanadium is a gray, hard, brittle metal used to reduce sensitivity to overheating and increase tensile strength in steel. Vanadium is a relatively common element; it does not occur naturally in elemental form.
The very hard, brittle, and corrosion-resistant metal increases tensile, wear, and heat resistance, as well as hardness, in steels as an alloying addition. In fast-spinning saw blades, vanadium suppresses overheating sensitivity and increases cutting durability. It can be easily forged, rolled, and drawn in a cold state.
The metal is widespread in small amounts and is found chemically bound in most bauxites, for example. Vanadium is primarily used as an alloy metal for steel and chrome steel. Steel alloys with up to 5% vanadium are used as tool steel in the area of hot and high-speed steels, e.g., as drills or taps. Vanadium is used in steel alloys due to its tendency for strong carbide formation.
Although vanadium is a relatively base metal, it is not attacked by air because it is covered with a thin oxide layer. However, strong oxidation begins when heated above 300 °C.
