The martensitic precipitation hardening steel 13-8 PH is characterized by high strength and hardness as well as excellent resistance to general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Additionally, the alloy exhibits good ductility and toughness in large cross-sections in both longitudinal and transverse directions. These impressive properties of stainless steel 13-8 PH are achieved through precise control of the chemical composition and microstructure as well as a special melting process that reduces impurities and minimizes segregation. Compared to other iron-based materials, this alloy offers excellent mechanical properties under demanding environmental conditions.
The stainless steel 13-8 PH is easily machinable and can be hardened in a single step at low temperatures. Cold working before hardening accelerates the process, especially at low hardening temperatures.
This steel is used for a variety of applications, including valve parts, fittings, cold-formed and machined fasteners, shafts, landing gear parts, pins, retaining rings, aircraft components, parts for nuclear reactors and petrochemical plants, where resistance to stress corrosion cracking is required. In general, this alloy is a good choice when a steel with high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to stress corrosion cracking with minimal directional dependency of properties is needed.
