Stainless steel with material number 1.4404 is a widely used chromium-nickel steel with molybdenum addition and the alloy designation X2CrNiMo17-12-2.
One of the main advantages of AISI 316L stainless steel is its increased corrosion resistance in corrosive environments. Heat resistance can reach almost 600°C while maintaining high formability.
When comparing two similar stainless steel grades, AISI 304 and AISI 316L, there is no reason not to give preference to the latter. AISI 316L has the best creep strength at high temperatures and an order of magnitude better mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures. The difference between these two stainless steels is therefore obvious.
In cases where there is a risk of corrosion in welded structures, a low-carbon grade such as AISI 316L should be used. Despite its many advantages, the price of AISI 316L is an order of magnitude higher than that of AISI 304. You should therefore think carefully about whether a molybdenum-containing stainless steel is actually required or whether it can be replaced by a food-grade AISI 304.
