The steel grade 1.4404 is a stainless, acid-resistant, and easily machinable steel. The steel has improved machinability and is suitable for the production of corrosion-resistant products through machining. 1.4404 has very good corrosion resistance, making it suitable for many applications. The addition of molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. It is non-magnetic but can become slightly magnetic through cold forming and welding.
Stainless steel 1.4404 has good oxidation resistance up to a temperature of 870 °C.
The material 1.4404 can be welded well with a variety of conventional welding methods. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it can be hardened by cold forming.
The material 1.4404 is usually slowly heated to 1150 °C. The forging temperature range is 900 °C. If no bending is planned, the material is cooled in water to avoid undesirable phases that reduce corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Discolorations and scales reduce corrosion resistance and must be removed by pickling or other suitable methods.
