The steel grade 1.4404 is a stainless, acid-resistant steel that is well-suited for machining. The steel has improved machinability and is suitable for manufacturing corrosion-resistant products by machining. 1.4404 has very good corrosion resistance, making it suitable for many applications. By adding molybdenum, resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments is improved. It is not magnetic, but can become slightly magnetic through cold forming and welding.
Stainless steel 1.4404 has good oxidation resistance up to a temperature of 870 °C.
The material 1.4404 can be welded well using a wide range of conventional welding processes. It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but it can be hardened by cold forming.
The material 1.4404 is typically slowly heated to 1150 °C. The temperature range for forging is 900 °C. If no bending is planned, the material is cooled in water to avoid undesired phases that would reduce corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Temper colors and scale layers reduce corrosion resistance and must be removed by pickling or other suitable methods.
