The material AW-6082 is an alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. This material has the highest strength among the 6000 series alloys. Alloy 6082 is known as a structural alloy. In the form of round bars, 6082 is the most commonly used alloy.
Since this is a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of the aluminium alloy 6082 has led to 6061 being used for many applications. Adding a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure, which in turn results in a stronger alloy.
Aluminium alloy 6082 is well machinable and produces dense chips when using chip breakers. Aluminium alloy 6082 is very weldable; however, the strength in the weld zone is lower. For welding it to itself, wire of alloy 4043 is recommended. For welding aluminium alloy 6082 with 7005, wire of alloy 5356 should be used.
