Molybdenum is a silvery-white, high-melting, brittle heavy metal with excellent mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

Heavy metal molybdenum is classified as a refractory metal due to its melting point of 2623 °C. It has high hardness and ductility. Molybdenum is very valuable as an alloying element because it can increase the hot strength, tensile strength, or hardness in alloys.

It also increases fatigue strength, cutting retention, and hardenability. At the same time, it reduces temper brittleness, ductility, and forgeability.

Pure molybdenum is very similar to tungsten and is easier to work with due to its lower hardness and density.

The industries in which molybdenum is frequently used are diverse. It is used as an alloy metal for electrodes, steel, X-ray and transmitter tubes, or wear-resistant layers. It is characterized by excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and a high melting point. Molybdenum is not usable in aerospace engineering.
