      Description:

Bismuth is a reddish-white, shiny, low-melting, brittle heavy metal. It's a bad conductor of electricity.

Bismuth, also known as bismuth, is a very rare element. Bismuth is the element symbol Bi and has atomic number 83. Recent research has concluded that bismuth is radioactive. Due to the very long half-life of around 19 trillion years, however, the specific activity is very low. The heavy metal with reddish luster has low hardness and high brittleness. It has poor thermal and electrical conductors. The low electrical conductivity is further reduced in a magnetic environment, which is unique among metals.

In addition, bismuth does not shrink on solidification. But it stretches about 3.3%, a behavior that it transmits to its alloy as well.

Bismuth is mainly used as an alloying metal for low-melting alloys. These alloys are used accordingly in soft soldering and as fuses in automatic fire alarms and sprinkler systems. The chemical industry uses bismuth as a catalyst.

Bismuth is unstable in moist air and oxidizes on the surface. On the other hand, it does not react when dry. Bismuth is not attacked by hydrochloric acid, but reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid. It is most soluble in nitric acid, which produces bismuth nitrate. During this process, nitric oxide is released.

      Properties of bismuth:

      • brittle metal
      • rhombohedral crystal structure
      • non-toxic
      • strongly diamagnetic
      • high electrical resistance

      Main application of bismuth:

      • alloying component
      • mechanical engineering
      • energy production
      • catalysts
