Our bismuth granulate has this chemical composition - Bi=94%, Si=2%. Bismuth is a reddish-white, shiny, low-melting and brittle heavy metal. It is a poor electrical conductor.
Bismuth, also called bismuth, is a very rare element. Bismuth has the element symbol Bi and atomic number 83. New research findings have shown that bismuth is radioactive. However, due to its very long half-life of about 19 billion years, its specific activity is very low. The heavy, reddish-shiny metal has low hardness and is very brittle. It is a poor conductor of heat and electricity. The low electrical conductivity decreases even further in a magnetic environment, which is unique among metals.
In addition, bismuth does not shrink when it solidifies. However, it expands by about 3.3%, a behavior it also transfers to its alloys.
Bismuth is mainly used as an alloying metal for low-melting alloys. These alloys are accordingly used for soft soldering and as a melting fuse in automatic fire detectors and sprinkler systems. In the chemical industry, bismuth is used as a catalyst.
Bismuth is unstable in moist air and oxidizes on the surface. Under dry conditions, it does not react. Bismuth is not attacked by hydrochloric acid, but it reacts with concentrated sulfuric acid. It is best soluble in nitric acid, forming bismuth nitrate. During this process, nitrogen monoxide is released.
