Tin is a silvery-white metal. It has a relatively low melting point for a metal (232 °C). One of its most important applications is soldering. By forming a thin oxide layer on the surface, tin is chemically relatively inert and is therefore also used for coating food-safe canned products (tinplate) and in medicine. It is also used to manufacture alloys, e.g., for bronzes and bearing metals. Increasingly, tin is used in the production of chemicals and in electronics. At room temperature, tin is very resistant to air and water.
Tin can be easily alloyed with most other ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Tin alloys have excellent sliding properties in the presence of lubricants and are therefore often used as bearing material.
A tin layer applied to a part or product by galvanizing protects the surface against corrosion. The treated part becomes more resistant to temperature effects and aggressive media. In addition, the product’s appearance is improved. These tin products are also used in electrolysis processes.
