Refractory hafnium has a melting point of 2000 °C and a boiling point of 5400 °C. Its density is 13.28 g/cm3. Due to these physical properties, hafnium is often used to produce high-strength and heat-resistant materials in metallurgy, as well as an alloying additive to obtain new strong, thermally stable and corrosion-resistant materials. Pure metal is ductile and can be deformed both hot and cold; it is well-solderable and can be used to manufacture especially critical metal structures, assemblies and parts.
Titanium alloyed with hafnium and its alloys are used to manufacture critical components of ship engines to obtain high-quality weld seams and improve the corrosion resistance of metals. By adding only 1% of this metal to aluminum, light and very strong alloys can be obtained.
Properties of hafnium:
- very corrosion-resistant
- very soft heavy metal
- can be rolled and stretched well
- very high melting and boiling temperature
- reactive metal
Main application of hafnium:
- Nuclear technology
- Medical technology
- Alloys with molybdenum, niobium, tantalum and tungsten
