Magnesium AZ31B is a silvery-white, lightweight metal. It is relatively soft, malleable, and moderately reactive. Its surface is protected by a thin oxide layer that is difficult to remove. This oxide layer means that magnesium does not need to be stored in an oxygen-free environment like alkali metals, although it oxidizes in air. Magnesium reacts with water at room temperature, forming hydrogen bubbles on the metal surface. Magnesium also reacts with most acids. Magnesium is reputed to be flammable, although this may apply to finely divided magnesium powders and ribbons.

The magnesium alloy AZ31B is mainly used in aerospace and general commercial applications.

Magnesium oxide is used as an additive in animal feed, as a filler in plastics, in the manufacture of heat-resistant bricks, and in products such as lightweight bicycle frames, car seats, and luggage. It can also be alloyed with up to 10% aluminum and traces of zinc to increase strength and be used in car bodies and aircraft. Magnesium is increasingly used by automotive manufacturers due to its environmental benefits, such as lighter vehicles with longer lifespans.
