Ferrotitanium is a ferroalloy, an alloy of iron and titanium, consisting of 20% iron and 70% titanium. It is used in steel production as a cleaning agent for iron and steel; titanium reacts strongly with sulfur, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen, forming insoluble compounds and binding them in the slag. It is therefore used for deoxidation and sometimes also for desulfurization and denitrification. In steel production, adding titanium results in a metal with a finer grain structure. Ferrotitanium is produced by mixing titanium sponge and scrap iron and melting them in an induction furnace.
