Indium is a rare, shiny silver-white metal. It has an atomic number 49 and an element symbol In. It is widely distributed in tiny quantities in the earth's crust and is also found in the hydrosphere. In our online shop Auremo you can find various rare earth metals at favourable prices.
Indium is similar to tin in its physical and chemical properties and to some extent in its toxicological properties. It is extremely soft and malleable. Indium is stable in air, but when heated it burns with a non-luminous, blue-red flame and produces indium oxide. The surface of indium remains shiny up to a melting point of 156 °C; above this point it forms an oxide film. Indium reacts explosively with dinitrogen tetroxide plus acetonitrile. Indium is resistant to water, it is attacked by mineral acids and is very resistant to alkalis.
Indium can be polished and retains its lustre better than silver. Its melting point is 156.60 °C, its boiling point is 2,072 °C and its density is 7.31 g/cm3. The low melting point of indium is the main factor in its commercial importance. This factor makes it ideal for soldering leads to semiconductors and transistors in the electronics industry. Another main use is alloying with other metals. Alloys of indium and silver as well as indium and lead have the ability to transport electricity better than pure silver and lead. Indium is used as a coating for bearings to increase wear resistance.
Properties of indium:
- low melting point
- low boiling point
- corrosion resistance
Main application of indium:
- as an alloy component
- mechanical engineering
- aerospace industry
