Niobium is very similar to tantalum and has similar properties. It has excellent chemical resistance and high heat resistance. Niobium has a high melting point and boiling point. It has good cold ductility.

Due to its good cold ductility, niobium can be moulded very well without cutting, but is difficult to machine because it forms a flow chip. Niobium is easy to weld and solder due to its metallic properties.

Niobium is used as an alloying metal for steel. It improves the heat and wear resistance as well as the weldability of the steel alloy. Another good property is its superconductivity, which is used in nuclear and reactor technology. Niobium is alloyed with tin, aluminium and zirconium for this purpose. At high temperatures, this alloy loses its electrical resistance and the transfer of electrical energy is loss-free.
