Niobium (Nb) is a gray transition metal that is routinely used as a key alloying element in the large-scale production of medium-grade steel, in addition to the production of lower-throughput superalloys for extremely valuable high-tech applications. Among the many benefits of niobium is the fact that it only takes small amounts to dramatically change the performance characteristics of an alloyed system. As little as 0.02% by weight can significantly improve the corrosion resistance and strength of steels. This makes niobium an increasingly important component in a wide range of applications.
Niobium oxide coatings can significantly improve the electrochemical corrosion and wear resistance of glass. This is ideal for extending the life of various components such as camera lenses and touch screens. Performance-enhancing niobium oxide layers are deposited by sputtering using high-purity, low-defect niobium sputtering targets.
Active steel surfaces (piping, underwater storage tanks, etc.) often need to be protected from complex forms of electrochemical corrosion such as pitting, where chlorides in seawater attack material defects. Niobium coatings can be used to protect the base metal by acting as a sacrificial coating and corroding in place of the underlying steel.
